Ever wonder what goes into creating National Park merchandise that doesn't look like every other design out there? Let me take you behind the curtain and show you our creative process—from that first spark of inspiration to the moment a finished product ships to your door.
Step 1: Research & Immersion
Before we sketch a single line, we immerse ourselves in the park. This isn't just about looking at pretty pictures online—though we do plenty of that. We study:
- Historical imagery and vintage National Park posters
- The park's unique and iconic features—what makes it different from every other park?
- Color palettes from the landscape itself
- Typography and design trends from the era when the park was established
- Stories from visitors and rangers about what makes the park special
Step 2: Concept Sketching
Armed with inspiration, our artists start sketching. And I mean a lot of sketching. For every design you see in our shop, there are probably 20-30 concepts that didn't make the cut.
We explore different approaches:
- Minimalist: Can we capture the park's essence with just a few lines?
- Vintage-inspired: What if this was designed in the 1940s?
- Modern: How do we make it feel contemporary without being trendy?
- Detailed: Should we include multiple landmarks or focus on one iconic feature?
Step 3: Design Refinement
Once we've narrowed down to 3-5 strong concepts, the real work begins. This is where we:
Perfect the Layout
Balance, hierarchy, and negative space. Every element needs to earn its place in the design.
Refine Colors
Test different color combinations. Will this work on both light and dark shirts? Does it feel authentic to the park?
Choose Typography
The right font can make or break a design. We test dozens before settling on the perfect one.
Scale Testing
Does it look good large on a hoodie and small on a sticker? Designs need to work at every size.
Step 4: Physical Product Testing
Here's where theory meets reality. A design might look perfect on screen but completely different when printed. We order test prints on actual products to evaluate:
- Color accuracy on different fabric colors
- Print quality and durability after washing
- How the design feels on the product
- Whether it looks as good in person as it does digitally
If something's off, we go back to the drawing board. We've scrapped designs at this stage when they didn't meet our standards, even after weeks of work.
Step 5: Launch & Iteration
Once a design passes our quality tests, it goes live in the shop. But the process doesn't end there.
We desire to pay close attention to customer feedback. If people consistently ask for a design on a different product, or suggest a color variation, we want to listen. Some of our best-selling designs came from customer requests.
Our Design Philosophy
We design for longevity. You should still love wearing it in five years.
Clean, uncluttered designs that let the park's beauty speak for itself.
Every design should feel true to the park's character and history.
We'd rather have 20 exceptional designs than 200 mediocre ones.
The Result: Gear You're Proud to Wear
By the time a design makes it into your hands, it's been through hundreds of hours of work, multiple revisions, and rigorous testing. It's been refined, printed, washed, and worn to make sure it meets our standards.
And that's exactly how we want it. Because when you wear Awestruck Outfitters, you're not just wearing another souvenir—you're wearing something thoughtfully designed to honor the places you love.
